At over $25 million dollars, this project represented Mayo Construction Company’s largest single contract in the company’s 100-plus year history. 160,000 tons of SP FAA 45 needed paving which equated to 600,000 tons of material being moved. Adding to its complexity was the need to coordinate the efforts of 13 subcontractors and 14 different trucking vendors.

This was the first phase of a major corridor improvement along US-52 from Carrington to Fessenden. US-52 is a two-lane federal highway that acts as a major transportation route for our nation’s truck drivers connecting Chicago, IL, Minneapolis, MN, Calgary, AB, and Edmonton, AB. We converted the two-lane road into multi-lane passing and made turn lane additions to improve traffic safety and provide safety-focused truck passing lanes.

The 37-mile project utilized several aggregate sources and multiple crushing, aggregate base, and paving crews to accomplish an aggressive construction schedule in just a single season (2022). We are grateful for all the support provided by our partners (mostly local) in getting this ambitious, unique project completed. An in-depth review and formal presentation were highlighted at the ND Asphalt Conference specific to the success of this project. Mayo Construction Company was proud to receive the 2022 1st Place Ride Quality Award from the NDDOT (North Dakota Department of Transportation) and NDLTAP (North Dakota Local Technical Assistance Program) for our work on this project.
